The original dwellers of the lush Darlington region were the Migunburri Tribe. These people had a bountiful life because of permanent running water, an abundance of wildlife, lush scrub and beautiful open forests.

The first settlers came around the late 1870's with selectors taking up land to cut the abundant supply of timber, mainly cedar and pine. Four sawmills were built in the district followed by four schools to accommodate the growing population. A provisional school was established at Darlington in 1890. In 1895 the first Darlington school was built. This school is situated on 40 acres of land and was donated by the Markwell family. It is located on the upper reaches of the Albert River. The school is separated from Hillview school by the Jinbroken Range.

The nearby sawmill closed and in 1915 the school closed due to falling numbers and reopened in 1939. Numbers fluctuated in the ensuing years, stabilizing in the 1980's.

The school consisted of one classroom until 1991 when, to the increased enrolments, a modular building was constructed, providing two classrooms.

The school is proud of its recently built well equiped library which is also used as a music room, a study area and various other school activities. An outdoor undercover performance area is also a highlight with a modern adventure playground, tennis court and beautiful surroundings.

There is also a new kitchen that provides the students the opportunity to cook a variety of food often picked from its own vegetable garden. The kitchen is also popular on Market Days when gourmet food is prepared and cooked for the local community and visitors. The chooks and aquaponic garden give the students an interest in being more self sufficient.
